On the night of March 5th, social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, owned by tech giant Meta, experienced an unexpected global outage. Many users were forcibly logged out of their accounts. However, the company has not provided any clarification regarding the cause of the outage. Currently, several hacker groups have claimed responsibility, but there is no evidence to substantiate these claims.
Cybersecurity firm Cyberint discovered that hacker groups named Skynet, Godzilla, and Anonymous Sudan have declared that they collaborated to launch the attack causing the outage on the aforementioned social media platforms. They have provided multiple screenshots as evidence. However, researchers remain skeptical of the hackers’ claims as they have not found any evidence of the attack. It is speculated that these hackers may be merely bluffing.
Nevertheless, considering that these three groups have previously engaged in malicious activities, including launching DDoS attacks on communication software platform Discord and AI chatbot ChatGPT, researchers do not entirely dismiss the possibility of their involvement in the outage.
