Following his accusation against OpenAI for pursuing commercial interests, tech mogul Elon Musk has announced that his AI company, xAI, will open source the Grok chatbot later this week.
Grok, unveiled by Musk last year, is touted to have a better sense of humor compared to existing chatbots. Initially planned as a paid service for X Premium Plus subscribers, Grok will be available in two forms: integrated within the X App and as a standalone app.
Until now, there have been minimal updates on Grok. However, Musk himself recently filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, a company he co-founded, claiming that they deviated from their original mission and prioritized profit over the development of potentially dangerous Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). He also criticized OpenAI for not making the GPT model open source.
However, other co-founders of OpenAI, including CTO Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, John Schulman, Wojciech Zaremba, and CEO Sam Altman, countered Musk’s claims. They alleged that Musk initially sought to integrate AI into Tesla and gain full control over OpenAI, positioning himself as the one seeking personal gains. They emphasized that OpenAI is committed to using AI to drive environmental and cultural preservation, a goal Musk had previously agreed upon, and argued that promoting human welfare does not necessitate open sourcing.
Musk’s Grok is expected to be unveiled to the public soon, but its reception among developers remains to be seen. Over the past few months, several AI models claiming to rival or surpass GPT-4 have emerged, including Google Gemini 1.5, Anthropic Claud 3 Opus, Mistral Large from a French startup, and Inflection 2.5.
