Windows Notepad to Receive Spelling Check and Auto-Correction Features

Notepad

Windows’ long-standing app, Notepad, is set to receive new spelling check and auto-correction features, enhancing the functionality of this simple yet widely used app.

Microsoft will begin rolling out the Notepad version 11.2402.18.0 update to Windows 11 Insiders through the Canary and Dev channels. The added spelling check feature will automatically highlight misspelled words with a red underline and provide correction suggestions. Users can simply click on the suggested spelling or use the Shift+F10 shortcut key to update to the correct word. If users determine that a word is not misspelled, they have the option to skip it throughout the document or add it to the dictionary, preventing further red underlines from appearing.

The feature currently supports multiple languages. Additionally, the new update introduces an auto-correction feature that automatically corrects text as users type.

The spelling check feature in Notepad is enabled by default in certain file types but disabled by default in log files and other code-related file types. Users can find the option to enable or disable this feature in the Notepad settings page or temporarily activate it through the context menu of a specific file. Microsoft has also redesigned the settings page to make it easier for users to locate and modify Notepad settings.

However, not all Windows Insiders will receive these features as Microsoft intends to collect user feedback and monitor download scenarios before releasing them to all Insiders.

The new features are expected to be integrated into the Windows 11 24H2 update, scheduled for deployment to PC users in the second half of this year. The current version is currently undergoing testing in the Canary and Dev channels.
